EPI® TDPA® Solutions
EPI Environmental Products Inc., is another A-ROO Company co-brand partner. All of our products are available on a custom basis using this additive. Extensive testing and qualification is done prior to being certified as a licensee and co-brand partner with EPI Environmental Products. Our products were tested and performed within the standards established by EPI®.
EPI’s TDPA™ (Totally Degradable Plastic Additives), which meets ASTM D6954-04 standards, provides a means for rendering conventional plastics degradable and is fully compatible with conventional recycling systems, prior to degradation commencing. The biggest benefit to this additive is that it does not affect the characteristics or performance of any plastic product it is used in. The films remain strong, has the same optical appearance and performs well during use.
TDPA™ is added in small quantities (typically 2-3%) to the conventional plastic during the film making process. This allows plastic products such as polyethylene bags to totally degrade within 24 - 36 months when disposed of appropriately. The film is FDA compliant for use in applications with food contact.
TDPA™ works by the oxo-degradation process. TDPA™ accelerates the plastic degradation process where the long polymer molecules are broken into shorter lengths and undergo oxidation. This process is triggered by heat, UV light, or mechanical stress. Oxidation causes the molecules to become hydrophilic (water attracting) and small enough to be ingestible by micro-organisms. The rate at which this happens for conventional plastics takes centuries. EPI’s TDPA™ additives are catalysts that accelerate this reaction so that it occurs over a few months to a couple of years under proper conditions.
